The Old Maid and the Thief
In this American one-act opera, a handsome vagrant takes up lodgings with a lonesome old maid and her young, chatty housemaid. His presence must be kept secret to avoid a scandal and little white lies quickly escalate to desperation and questionable decision making. Commissioned by NBC, Gian-Carlo Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief was among the first operas written specifically for the radio.
